BCCI Selector Responds to Mohammed Shami's Fitness Concerns: What Does It Mean for His Future? (2025)

A recent comment by Mohammed Shami, the talented Indian fast bowler, has sparked a conversation that's sure to divide opinions. Shami, who last played for India in their Champions Trophy win, has expressed his disappointment at being overlooked for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia. But here's where it gets controversial... BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has a different take on the matter.

In a recent appearance at the NDTV World Summit 2025, Agarkar responded to Shami's comment, stating that fitness is the key factor. He emphasized that Shami's availability for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy doesn't automatically translate to national team selection. Shami's battle with recurring ankle and knee injuries, which required surgery after the 2023 World Cup, has been a significant hurdle.

Agarkar's response was straightforward: "If he says that to me, I'd probably answer that. If he was fit, he'd be in the team." He added, "Our domestic season has just begun, and we'll see if he's fit enough. It's the first round of Ranji games, and we'll have a better idea after a few more matches."

But here's the part most people miss: Shami's fitness isn't just about his ability to play. It's about his consistency and durability over a long period, especially with the demanding schedule of international cricket.

Agarkar further explained, "Even before the England tour, we said if he was fit, he'd be on the plane. But his fitness wasn't there. During the Australia tour, we wanted him badly, but it wasn't to be."

The story could be different if Shami maintains his fitness over the next few months, but as of now, he wasn't fit enough for the England tour, according to Agarkar.

India's upcoming series in Australia, starting October 19, will see the return of veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, marking their first international game since the 2025 Champions Trophy final.

So, the question remains: Is fitness the only factor in team selection? Or are there other considerations at play? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
